The Future of Team Building

Team Building, as defined by Google, is “The action or process of causing a group of people to work together effectively as a team, especially by means of activities and events designed to increase motivation and promote cooperation.”

Whether you want to embrace it or not, it’s impossible to deny that our ever-growing technology will be the way of the future. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to get an understanding of how our world is changing with the new technology that is constantly emerging.

Embracing the evolving technology that is steadily becoming more commercially available now will make for a smoother transition when they start being applied to the workforce in the years to come.

If you’re looking for a briefer on what exactly virtual reality is and where it’s at in the world today, I’ve included a resource below.

Quite recently, Fortune predicted that over 200 million VR headsets will be sold by 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 142%. Simply put, virtual reality is as relevant as ever, and now is the time to get a jump start on understanding this new and exciting medium.

Virtual reality isn’t just another platform for the gamer generation. Yes, that is most certainly part of it, but with applications now being created for education and healthcare purposes, it will soon be more important than ever.

As for a team building activity, because of a wide range of content that is available all in one place, it’s a great idea for people of all ages and skill levels to jump in to. Even if you aren’t a ‘video gamer’ per-say, there is bound to be something for you and your team in Virtual Reality

The core idea of team building revolves around communication and teamwork, and VR is a great medium to incorporate both while still having tons of fun. Work together to achieve a common goal, and you’ll be going back to the office together afterward with an even stronger bond.

Organizing a Team Building Event

Let’s take a step back for a moment. Your semi-annual or annual office party is coming up, and you are landed with the task of finding a suitable event for your company outing. You’ve already gone bowling, axe-throwing and been to too many restaurant dinners to name. It can be daunting to look for something fresh and exciting, while at the same time trying to find an activity suitable for everyone.

Luckily, in the modern age of social media, there are numerous resources available to help you brainstorm ideas. Of course, there are the obvious elements to consider like location, amount of staff needed to accommodate and budget limitations. But to expand on that, consider checking out social groups to see what other people are doing in your area, or local event listing websites such as eventsource.ca

For a more in-depth look at how to recognize and overcome organizing a team building activity, we’ve included a resource above.

Having a Successful Team Building Event

If you’re the person in charge of organizing events for your company, you most definitely want to make sure they go down with a bang. Keeping that in mind, there are many factors to consider to ensure you and your coworkers have the best time possible.

The ideal event should be a mix of the perfect activity along with a great venue that hosts you. If you are not going out for a separate dinner before or after, make sure wherever you choose has substantial food options for everyone (eg. allergies, dietary restrictions).

And of course, alcohol. Who doesn’t like a good cocktail while chatting with your coworkers? Consider choosing a venue that is LLBO licensed.

Another thing to consider is making sure the setting is appropriate for socializing. One of the main reasons for having company outings is the chance to get to know your coworkers on a more personal level outside of the office. You want to be in a place where the music isn’t too loud and has ample seating options to ensure you and your teammates can converse comfortably.

If you’d like to go more in-depth on some tips and factors that make a successful team building event, I’ve linked some resources above.

Alternatively, did you know that you can bring Virtual Reality to a location of your choosing? If you’re not able to bring the whole team to a specific venue, consider doing an offsite event for your next team building activity.

Consider checking out the post linked above for some suggested content on how to make a great team building event at any location you choose.
